Audio Hardware

Problems
Problems can arise when connecting older sound systems to the webcasting computer. The output will usually be going straight into the 'AUX IN' of the computer or into the 'AUX IN' of an audio card in the computer. The sound system will usually output a balanced high voltage signal and the computer will want an unbalanced low voltage input. Also, the older sound systems have a shortage of outputs to use.
Incorrectly connecting a sound system to a computer can result in distortion in the webcast and/or a general humming in the entire system. This can be very confusing and frustrating when commercially available cables are used to split the sound output and connect this output to the computer. Just because these cables are available does not mean they will work as expected.
An understanding of the problems and the available hardware to solve these problems is a necessity. Usually, a simple attenuator or cable wiring modification is all that is needed to produce acceptable sound. For superior sound, equalizers and/or compressor / limiters may also be needed. And, sometimes it makes more sense to replace an aged mixer with one of the newer models which has everything needed built in. (Note: When replacing an older stereo system component, try to stay with the same manufacturer because of compatibility problems.)
Improvements
Having a webcasting system means there will be an operator for that system. This provides an opportunity to improve the function of the audio system as a whole. The labor load on that operator must be small, but the simple flipping of a switch can make major differences. For example, you have a wireless lapel microphone for your minister and he always forgets to turn it on. The webcast operator can see when the lapel microphone is needed and switch it on and off remotely. Be sure and make a wish list before you modify your sound system.
